Where retrofit insulation goes in your house
Attic floor top-up
Blown-in fill, loose insulation sent up through a hose, goes over what's already there once the gaps are sealed. It's the usual fix when the upstairs runs hot.
Filling closed walls
Insulation goes into outside walls that were built empty, and we don't tear out the drywall to do it. It suits older houses where outside walls feel cold.
Is it worth adding insulation to an older house in Bell?
Retrofit insulation means adding to or replacing the insulation in a house that's already built, usually on the attic floor or inside the outside walls, so your house in Bell holds a steadier temperature year round.
A lot of houses in Bell and the cities around it went up with thin insulation or none in the walls, and what's in the attic has often settled flat, gotten wet or picked up droppings over the years. The price mostly turns on how much space we're covering, whether old material has to come out first, how many gaps need sealing and whether the walls are part of the job. The schedule turns on the same things, plus anything that has to be settled before we add a thing, like old wiring or a permit, and I give you the price in writing once I've seen the space.
Retrofit insulation, from safety checks to cleanup
I go by what's actually up there and in the walls. Old fill, open gaps and old wiring get handled first, because insulation laid over a problem just hides it.
A plan for old wiring
If the house has knob and tube wiring, the cloth-wrapped kind, we sort out a plan for it first, since the electrical code bars insulation around it.
Pull what can't stay
Fill that's soaked or full of droppings comes out before anything new goes in, because fresh insulation over it just keeps the problem.
Seal the gaps
We do the air sealing next, closing gaps around can lights, pipes and the attic hatch, so the new insulation isn't fighting a draft.
Loose fill or foam
Sealing plus loose-fill attic insulation usually wins, but when your ductwork lives up there, spray foam insulation earns its higher cost by sealing as it insulates.
Vents open, edges full
We keep the eave vents clear so the attic still breathes, and we run full depth out to the edges, where most attics come up thin.
Walls with new siding
If you're redoing your siding, that's a good time to fill the walls from outside, so the house gets opened up once for both jobs.
Why Bell homeowners call Performance Bell
I learned to fix things on a family farm and spent years on insulation crews around Los Angeles before starting this business in 2020. We're known for doing the prep and sealing first and for telling people straight what their attic, walls or crawl space actually need.
I see your house in person
I come out myself to look at the space, so the person telling you what the job needs is the one who's spent years doing it.
Licensed and insured, crew working safe
We're licensed and insured. Our crew works safe up in the attic and cleans up after itself, so you don't find insulation tracked through your rooms.
Your satisfaction, guaranteed
That's our promise on the work. It starts with the truth, and I'd rather tell you a job isn't ready yet than take your money for it.
What happens after you call about retrofit insulation in Bell?
Every retrofit starts with a look at the space, so the plan fits what's really in your attic and walls, and anything that has to come first gets settled before install day.

Questions about insulating an older house
How do I insulate existing walls without tearing out the drywall?
Insulation is usually blown into each wall cavity through small holes drilled near the top, from inside or outside, and the holes get patched after. In a house built before 1980, lead safety rules can apply when the work disturbs inside or outside wall surfaces, depending on how much is disturbed, so I check the age of the house first.
What should I do if my attic has vermiculite insulation?
Leave it alone and don't stir it up, because the EPA says disturbing vermiculite could release asbestos fibers that are a risk to breathe. If you decide to have it taken out, the EPA says to use a trained, accredited asbestos abatement contractor separate from whoever looked at it. Tell us up front and I'll plan the rest of the job around it.
How much does retrofit insulation cost in Bell?
There's no one price, because it comes down to what your house needs, and I give it to you in writing after I see the space. Old fill that has to come out, a lot of gaps to seal, adding the walls or choosing foam over loose fill all push it up, and a top-up over a sound, dry attic costs the least.
Who is licensed to install insulation in California?
California's contractor licensing board has a classification for insulation contractors, the ones who install insulation to control temperature or sound. Ask any contractor you're weighing which license they hold before you sign.
How do I get my attic ready for new insulation?
Clear out whatever's stored up there, because a federal checklist for prepping an attic floor starts with that. The same checklist calls for dams, small barriers that hold loose fill back, around the attic hatch, equipment and flues or chimneys, so it's fair to ask whether a quote includes them.
Does attic insulation need maintenance once it's in?
No, insulation needs no upkeep once it's in, and it helps your house stay more comfortable. If you ever get a roof leak or critters in the attic, have someone look, because wet or dirty fill stops doing its job.
Other work that pairs with this
Spray foam insulation
When ducts run through a hot attic or the room over the garage won't hold temperature, foam seals the air and insulates in one layer.

If the upstairs bakes every summer and you can see the tops of the ceiling joists, the attic floor is usually the first place to add.

Drafts around can lights, pipes and the hatch can undercut any insulation, so closing them up is worth doing even before a bigger job.

Retrofit insulation permits and older houses in Bell
The City of Bell requires building permits for a lot of projects, and its list names things like new construction, fences, fireplaces and signs, not insulation, so that list alone doesn't settle whether your job needs one. The city also says most homeowner projects need what it calls a combination permit. Permit rules aren't the same in Bell, the other cities and the county areas, so we check with the office for your address before we start, and if your job needs a permit, we handle pulling it. You can ask the city yourself at (323) 588-6211, extension 2611.
Most of the houses we work on here are older, with little or nothing in the walls and an attic layer that's settled thin over the years. We see the same thing on jobs in East Los Angeles and Walnut Park, so we start with sealing and a hard look at what's already up there.
