Kinds of insulation removal we handle

  • Old blown-in and loose fill

Blown-in insulation is loose fill blown through a hose. Over the years it mats down and soaks up leaks, so it has to come out when it's wet, dirty or nested in.

  • Old batts and rolled insulation

Batts are the pre-cut blankets laid in the framing above your ceiling. They come out by hand when they've sagged, gone moldy, been chewed up or soaked in smoke.

When does old attic insulation need to come out?

Insulation removal in Bell, CA, means pulling out old attic insulation that's been soaked, gone moldy, been burned or fouled by rats and mice, so the attic can be checked, sealed and insulated again from a clean start.

You might have a musty smell, droppings on the insulation, a water stain on the ceiling or an upstairs that stays hot whatever you do. New insulation laid over that just buries the problem, and pulling the old stuff out lets us see leaks and pest damage and get at the gaps that need sealing before attic insulation goes back in. The price moves with how big your attic is, what kind of insulation is up there, and how much of it there is and what shape it's in. The schedule mostly turns on the attic's size and how hard it is to work in, and I give you the price in writing after I've seen it.

Insulation removal, cleanup and sealing

I decide what your attic needs after I've seen it, because what's wrong up there decides whether the old material comes out, what gets fixed after and what can wait.

  • Check for vermiculite first

I look without stirring it up, and if it's vermiculite I'll tell you straight it's for an asbestos abatement contractor, not us.

  • Bag it in the attic

We bag old insulation up in the attic before it moves through your house, and we keep the dust down around rodent mess.

  • Look over the bare attic

With the attic cleared, we can see roof leaks, wet wood and pest damage, plus the gaps around lights, pipes and the hatch.

  • Seal, then insulate

We seal the gaps before new insulation goes in, and cold floors or hot walls may call for crawl space insulation or wall insulation.

Why Bell calls us for insulation removal and sealing

We're known for doing the prep and sealing first and for telling you straight what your attic needs. If it isn't ready for new insulation yet because of a leak or pests, I'd rather say so than take your money for it.

  • Started in Bell in 2020

I spent years on insulation crews around Los Angeles before I started this business in Bell in 2020, so I know what old attics around here tend to hide.

  • Licensed and insured, crew works safe

We're licensed and insured. I want my crew working safe in your attic and leaving your house clean, so we protect the path to the hatch on the way in.

  • I check the work before we leave

Our installers do the removal and the work that follows, and I look it over myself before we wrap up, so a missed gap doesn't get buried under new insulation.

What happens when you call about insulation removal in Bell?

We plan the job around your house and what's actually in your attic, because its size and the shape the old insulation is in decide how removal goes.

Insulation removal questions from Bell

How much does attic insulation removal cost in Bell, CA?

Attic insulation removal in the Los Angeles area usually costs about $2,000 to $6,000 per project, which is the going rate around here and not a quote for your house. Where your job lands depends on the attic's size, the type of insulation, and how much there is and what condition it's in. I give you the price in writing once I've seen it.

Can I remove vermiculite insulation myself?

The EPA strongly recommends against removing vermiculite yourself. Federal asbestos rules leave out work owners do in their own homes, but the EPA's advice is to leave vermiculite undisturbed, since disturbing it can put asbestos fibers in the air. If you do choose removal, the EPA says a trained, accredited asbestos abatement contractor should do it, separate from whoever assessed it, and that's not us.

How long does attic insulation removal take?

Removal takes anywhere from 4 hours to 2 days or more, depending on how big the attic is and how complicated the job is. If your attic is large or hard to work in, plan for the longer end. I'll tell you what to expect for yours when I come out.

How is insulation with rodent droppings removed safely?

The CDC says insulation soiled with rodent urine and droppings goes into plastic bags for removal. Sweeping or vacuuming droppings and nests can put tiny virus droplets in the air, so it's fair to ask any crew how they bag the waste. That's why we bag it up in the attic, as I said above.

How do I tell if my attic has vermiculite insulation?

Look at it from the hatch without touching or stirring it. Vermiculite is a pebble-like, pour-in insulation, usually gray-brown or silver-gold, and it looks nothing like fluffy fill or batts. If you think you see it, leave it alone and tell us when you call.

What kind of contractor removes attic insulation in California?

An insulation contractor handles ordinary removal, and vermiculite goes to an asbestos abatement contractor. California's licensing board has its own classification for contractors who install insulation for temperature or sound control, and asbestos work has separate state rules, which I cover below.

Insulation removal in Bell and the cities around it

Bell's Building and Safety Division issues the city's construction permits, reviews plans and inspects construction. Its permit list names things like new buildings, fences, fireplaces and signs, not insulation removal, so that list doesn't settle whether your job needs a permit and the office is the place to ask. Permit rules aren't the same in Bell, the other cities and the county areas, so we check with the office for your address before we start, and if your job needs a permit, we handle pulling it.

State law limits asbestos work involving 100 square feet or more of asbestos material to contractors licensed or certified for asbestos abatement, which is one more reason vermiculite isn't ours to pull. We're based in Bell and work the cities around it, and we find the same older attics, with layers of old fill and signs of rats, on jobs in East Los Angeles and Walnut Park.
